I remember hearing God tell me “It’s better to let go than to hang on.” I heard this spoke to me in a season of my life where I was struggling to make the move from a business owner to a human service-related field. I knew God was placing me there, but I had a hard time letting go of what I had built. On that December morning when I had confessed my sins, repented, and truly accepted Jesus as my Savior, I was so changed that I said, “God, use me.” What I've learned is that you do not always get to choose how God will use you, but you have the choice to obey him when He places it on you. I was willing to move into a human service field and work for a non-profit, but I wanted to keep the store also. I couldn’t fully step out into what God was calling me to do if I kept one hand on the store door. I had to let go.

In the same sense you cannot live for God and live for the world. We cannot serve God and do His will while having a worldly mindset. Romans 12:1 wants you to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God, but to do that, we must be transformed by the renewing of our minds and only Jesus can do that for us! Romans 12:2 also tells us not to conform to the world! That means when you conform to the way of thinking and behaving like the world, you then blend in with the world, but Jesus has called you out of that and has set you apart. You have been sanctified by the truth and to be sanctified means to be set apart, to be made holy. As Jesus prayed for the disciples in John 17:13-19 (MEV), But now I am coming to You, and I say these things in the world that they may have My joy fulfilled in themselves.  I have given them Your word. And the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world.  I do not pray that You should take them out of the world, but that You should keep them from the evil one. They are not of the world even as I am not of the world.  Sanctify them by Your truth. Your word is truth.  As You sent Me into the world, so I sent them into the world. For their sakes I sanctify Myself, that they also may be sanctified by the truth.”

If we are still hanging onto the past sins in our lives and trying to live for the world, then we are being just how I was, needing to let go so you can move forward. Growing in becoming deeply rooted in the Lord requires us at times to let go. Removing what doesn’t belong and what we once thought was ok to do but realize that it doesn’t glorify the Lord. Learning how to die to the flesh requires us to let go. Growing means we must let go. As time goes on with our walk with the Lord, we will start to experience new desires in our hearts, and God will pull and pluck out what doesn’t belong. Sometimes that puts us in a situation to let go. What is it that you need to let go of?

  • Is it a sin that you’re struggling with, and you feel the conviction?
  • Is it a relationship that isn’t bringing you closer to God?
  • Are you hanging onto unforgiveness or guilt?
  • Do you need to let go of control and surrender to God so He can move in a situation?
  • Is God placing desires on your heart to do things and you are scared?
  • Letting go of your will and submitting to God’s?
  • Or maybe God is wanting to fulfill a mission through you that seems bigger and it’s going to require you to let go.

Whatever the situation is, letting go is hard, but if we want to live for the Lord and to pick up that cross daily, then we need to be intentional about letting go. When we struggle to let go, then simply just call upon the name of the Lord and he will be there to walk you through the process of letting go. Remember the words God spoke to me, “it’s better to let go than to hang on.”

Reflect on Romans 12:1-2

I urge you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, that you
present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service of worship.
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Lord,

I come to you today in prayer to let go of _____________. I know that is causing me not to be able to move forward in my walk with you. I no longer want that or anything else to hinder my walk or my growth in you. Please show me what in my life needs to be plucked or pulled out and place your desires in me. I ask that you help me to let go where it is needed. I praise you and I thank you for everything that you do.

in Jesus's name, Amen.
