How often do we overlook someone who simply just needs to see Jesus in us?
At the end of Matthew 20 Jesus had departed from Jericho, and there was a great multitude that followed him. On the way, there were two blind men, and when they heard that Jesus had passed by, they cried out, asking for Jesus to have mercy on them. They even declared him, saying, “Oh Lord, Thou son of David." The multitude that followed behind Jesus, rebuked them. They wanted them to hold their peace. They attempted to quiet them, but these two men continued to cry out to Jesus, asking him to have mercy upon them so they could be healed.
Jesus asked them what they wanted him to do for them. They just simply said, "Lord, that our eyes may be opened." Verse 34 tells us that Jesus had compassion on them, so he touched their eyes and immediately their eyes received sight. He knew they had pure intentions and truly believed in Him has Lord.
They were so moved and thankful that the Lord granted their wish, their prayer, that upon receiving eyesight, these two men began to follow Jesus. He healed those men, and they chose to follow him. We all have that same choice to follow Jesus and to bring others along with us. When we experience the life-giving transformational work of Jesus in our lives, we should be just like these two men and want to follow Jesus. That is what conversion looks like upon genuine salvation that only Jesus can give. You want to follow him!
Due to the finished work on the cross, we are spiritually healed, ""But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities; The chastisement for our peace was upon Him, and by His stripes we are healed." (Isaiah 53:5 NKJV). The spirit-filled life we experience and the deep healing that came through salvation should absolutely have us wanting others to receive this beautiful gift of mercy and grace. As we follow Jesus like the multitude in this passage, how often do we quiet the ones around us who are actually needing help? How many people do we put off because you think that they’re going to disturb what you have going on? How many people do you look over because you don't think they are serious? How many people do you cross paths with that simply need to see Jesus in you?
Unlike Jesus, we don’t know people’s hearts, and we don’t always know their full intentions, but we can still love people through prayer. We can love people through service, and we can simply share with them what Jesus has done for us. There are many people out there in this world that are crying and they are reaching out for some kind of hope, and we carry the hope of our testimonies that what Jesus has done for us, he can do for them. We can have compassion but still have boundaries. We can show mercy and plant seeds of the gospel with every encounter we have. On the other side, we can be like the multitudes that follow Jesus that day try to quiet, disregard, and remove the ones that have come across our path that he’s wanting us to simply have compassion on and make even just a one-time impact. We all know the stories of people going into a church for the 1st time and quickly being condemned, looked over, or disregarded. We should never want someone in our church, at our job, or within our path to feel that way. As followers of Jesus Christ, we do not heal people, but we can help point them to the one that can and we can pray for them on their behalf. As I quoted earlier from Isaiah 53:5, by His stripes we are healed." Due to the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ, He passes us over from death to life and we get to live in complete freedom and are saved from an eternal spiritual death. There’s no better healing than spiritual healing, but there’s also emotional, mental, and physical healing that the Lord wants to do even in the Christian’s life. Don't look over those fellow Christians either.
Today reach out to the Lord and ask him to heal an area of your life and trust him that he will do it, just like these two men. Intercede on behalf of another believer. Today and this week, don’t hinder, rebuke or quiet the ones that are reaching out for help. Instead, use sound judgment through discernment provided by the Holy Spirit to help those that others have overlooked. Remember that you don’t know the intentionality of their heart, but the Lord does. That is why we should always seek his guidance through the Spirit leading us. The Lord will show you what to do, what to say, and how to help with the ones he places within your path.
- Is there any area in your life or someone else's where you or they need to receive the Lord touch or healing?
- Ask the Lord to give you Wisdom and Discernment in all situations with people.
- How can you this week point someone to Jesus?
Lord, Jesus, here I am, asking You to do what only You can do it in my life. The bible tells me that You are the same yesterday, today, and forever. You are the God who performs miracles! I ask for your healing over every part of my life—physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. I ask that you make me strong and resilient for the days ahead. Heal me through and through! Deliver me from my tendency toward anxiety, depression, and worry, and help me to break down any walls or barriers in your name, Jesus. I know the battle has been won and I ask that you give me a vision for what a fully healthy, healed me looks like and help me to go after that person with purpose and with you as the center. Take my efforts and multiply them, Lord.
I also ask in your name, Jesus, that you will help me to notice anyone who you are trying to place in my path, even if it is just to fellowship with or to pray for. Forgive me for when I do not extend mercy and grace out to others. I humbly seek Your divine guidance in every step I take.
Illuminate my path with Your wisdom and clarity, helping me to discern every step and situation. May your light shine brightly through me to point others to You. I know that you have great purpose for those who believe in your name. I lean fully on you, Lord, for You alone are able.
In Jesus name, AMEN
