London, Kentucky (SPA)--- Acting Chief of Police Bobby Day has emerged as a stabilizing force for the London Police Department during a challenging period, drawing on over three decades of law enforcement experience to guide the community forward. A former Kentucky State Police Special Response Team member, firearms instructor, and academy leader, Day built the Laurel County School Police Department from the ground up, demonstrating the tactical expertise and strategic vision he now brings to his current role.

Day joined the London Police Department as Assistant Chief in early 2023, establishing a clear standard for the department with his philosophy: "It's all about doing the right thing for the right reason, and not accepting mediocrity." When Chief Jerry Hollon resigned in May 2025, Day stepped into the Acting Chief position, immediately focusing on restoring confidence and stability to the department.

The department faced significant challenges following a December 2024 incident during a search warrant execution on Vanzant Road, where 63-year-old Doug Harless was fatally shot when officers believed he pointed a weapon at them. The warrant had been executed at an incorrect address. In response to the tragedy, Acting Chief Day provided measured updates to the community, emphasizing that the Kentucky State Police were conducting a thorough, independent investigation, including forensic testing, interviews, and medical examiner review. He stressed that accuracy must take precedence over speed and that findings would be forwarded to the appropriate prosecuting attorney and potentially a grand jury.

Day's leadership approach emphasizes high standards and attention to detail. "I want their expectations of themselves to exceed my expectations of them, and my expectations are going to be high," he said. He places strong emphasis on professional image, conduct, and community engagement, believing that officers should actively connect with the public and local businesses to build trust and safety.

Most recently serving as chief of police for the Laurel County School System, Day helped establish that department when mandated by the state legislature. "The schools are near and dear to my heart and always will be," Day said. "I felt like with me coming to the London Police Department that I could have a bigger impact on London and Laurel County, as well as the schools."

Day views his role through a community-centered lens, stating, "We're a team. We're a family. London and Laurel County is our family. We owe it to the community to make it the best department it can be." His extensive leadership experience and commitment to thoroughness and accountability position him to guide the department through this transitional period while working to rebuild community trust.
