Somerset, Kentucky (SPA) ---- Motorists traveling on U.S. 27 in Pulaski County should prepare for lane closures beginning Monday as the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet works to rebuild traffic signals damaged in May's severe weather.
The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet District 8 Office announced Friday that crews will start reconstruction work on traffic signal 22 at the intersection of KY 1642 (Parkers Mill Road) at mile point 12.9. Following completion of that work, crews will move to rebuild traffic signal 23 at the Somerset Mall entrance at mile point 12.65. The tornado damage from May has left the critical traffic control infrastructure in need of complete reconstruction, prompting the state transportation department to schedule the intensive repair work during a three-week window.
Construction Schedule and Traffic Impact
Lane closures on U.S. 27 will occur intermittently in both directions during the construction period. State officials said the closures are strategically scheduled for evening hours when traffic volumes are typically lower to minimize disruption to commuters. Additional lane closures on side streets may also be implemented before the start of the school year to help expedite the reconstruction process, according to KYTC officials. "Motorists should be prepared for delays in the work zone, and watch for construction equipment and workers near the roadway," the transportation cabinet advised in its announcement. The project timeline spans approximately three weeks, though officials cautioned that the schedule could change due to weather conditions or other unforeseen circumstances.
Travel Resources
Drivers can monitor current travel and traffic conditions through the state's online portal at goky.ky.gov or contribute real-time reports via Waze or through the mobile application. District 8-specific traffic information is available through the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's social media channels, Facebook. X, Instagram. The traffic signal reconstruction represents part of ongoing recovery efforts following the severe weather that struck the region in May, affecting critical transportation infrastructure throughout the area.
