Frankfort, Kentucky (SPA)--A former county clerk in Kentucky has come forward with allegations that undocumented immigrants were able to obtain state-issued driver’s licenses through illicit payments of roughly $200 in cash.
The former clerk, who spoke to reporters on condition of anonymity pending an ongoing investigation, claims the transactions took place over a period of several months while she was employed at a local licensing office. According to her account, certain individuals approached the office with limited documentation but were still able to secure licenses after paying cash “under the table” to intermediaries.
“I was told not to ask questions,” the former clerk said. “The process bypassed normal verification steps, and the payment never went through official channels.”
State officials have not yet confirmed the allegations, but the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet issued a statement on Monday saying it takes “all reports of fraud or misconduct seriously” and will “fully cooperate with law enforcement” to determine whether any criminal violations occurred.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) declined to comment on the specifics of the claim but reiterated that obtaining state identification through fraudulent means is a federal offense.
Local advocacy groups are divided over the news. Some immigrant rights organizations warn that the allegations could fuel anti-immigrant sentiment, while others stress the need for secure licensing systems that prevent abuse without denying lawful access to those eligible.
The former clerk says she decided to speak out after leaving her position earlier this year, citing concerns about public safety and legal compliance. “It’s not about politics,” she said. “It’s about making sure the rules apply equally to everyone.”
As of press time, no arrests have been made. Investigators have not confirmed how many licenses may have been issued through the alleged scheme.
