Somerset, Kentucky (SPA)---For Joe Lyons, Pulaski County isn’t just a place on a map; it is the foundation of his family and his life’s work. This week, Lyons officially announced his candidacy for 3rd District Magistrate in the upcoming May 2026 Republican Primary, bringing a platform built on fiscal responsibility, public safety, and a deep-seated commitment to listening to the people.
A Voice for the 3rd District
Lyons’ decision to run was born out of conversations with his neighbors in the 3rd District. He noted a growing sentiment among residents who felt that local government decisions were being made "about them, not with them."
"Whether it was road concerns, growth issues, or basic services, people want someone who listens and follows through," Lyons said. Having spent years observing how county-level decisions impact the daily lives of citizens, he felt a responsibility to step up and serve as a dedicated voice for his community.
Professionalism and Proven Expertise
Lyons is no stranger to the complexities of management and oversight. As both a business owner and a local department head, he manages budgets and navigates regulations daily. It is this "real-world" experience that he intends to bring to the Fiscal Court.
-
Budgetary Stewardship: Lyons emphasizes a "common sense" approach to spending. "In business, you learn quickly that you can’t spend money you don’t have—and every dollar needs to count," he noted. He pledges to ensure taxpayer money is handled with efficiency and transparency.
-
Defining the Role: While roads and bridges are essential, Lyons believes the most critical responsibility of a Magistrate in 2026 is accessibility. He plans to be a present and responsive representative, ensuring that county government works for the people.
Vision for the Future: Growth and Tourism
As Pulaski County continues to expand, Lyons is focused on managing that growth responsibly. His platform highlights several key priorities for the next four years:
-
Responsible Economic Growth: Lyons aims to protect the 3rd District’s unique character—including its neighborhoods, farmland, and small businesses—while ensuring infrastructure keeps pace with development.
-
Public Safety: Describing essential services as "non-negotiable," he supports fully funding and equipping the Sheriff’s department and emergency services.
-
The Tourism Link: Recognizing Lake Cumberland as a primary asset, Lyons proposes closer coordination between the Fiscal Court and the local Chamber of Commerce to promote off-season tourism and outdoor recreation.
"I’m Not Running for a Title"
When he isn't working, Lyons can often be found spending time with his family and watching his two active grandchildren enjoy Lake Cumberland and local parks. It is this personal connection to the land and its people that drives his campaign.
"I’m not running for a title; I’m running to serve," Lyons stated. He wants voters to know that he is someone they can talk to at the grocery store or call with tough questions, holding himself to a high standard of honesty and accountability.
As the May Primary approaches, Lyons’ message to the voters of the 3rd District remains simple: he will show up, listen, and do what is right for Pulaski County.
