How can someone come to faith without hearing about the gospel? “How then shall they call on Him in whom they have not believed? And how shall they believe in Him of whom they have not heard? And how shall they hear without a preacher? And how shall they preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things!” (Romans 10:14-15 NKJV)
Romans 10:17 tells us that “faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.” The gospel can only spread if the followers of Jesus share it. Everyone who accepted Christ is also sent to share the gospel. This can be a specific calling if you have the gift of evangelism, but it is also a general calling. Every follower of Jesus is sent to share the gospel in his or her setting.
Do you see yourself as a sent person? How do you see your faith? Do you confess your faith, i.e. do your friends, family, colleagues and neighbors know that you believe in Jesus? This could be easy and natural for you, then that is great. If you are challenged with talking openly about your faith, try to take it one step at a time. Do not overwhelm yourself but set yourself a realistic goal. This might be to open up about your faith to one person during the next week. This does not mean that you must tell them the whole gospel; it can mean that you just mention your faith in a conversation or situation. Don’t expect too much too fast but as you share about your faith, you will find a flow and observe the reactions of those people whom you share it with. If you talk about yourself and your faith without pushing it onto them, most people are respectful and are open to hearing about it. Don’t pressure yourself but ask the Lord what sharing the Gospel could be like for you.
If you are already used to sharing your faith with others, what is your experience on how others react? What could be the next step? People are often very open to be prayed for; or if they are interested, they might be happy to join something like a bible study, a biblical painting class, or an event. Some people are comfortable in a setting where they can find out about the Christian faith without needing to commit to anything and can just experience the presence of the Lord and his followers without pressure. You know your flow for witnessing and sharing the gospel, but what is another way you can continue to grow the Kingdom?
Here are some Steps you can follow to help you share the gospel for the 1st time or to expand that reach.
- Pray: Ask God for guidance before sharing the gospel. Ask God to give you the words to say and the wisdom to know when and how to share your faith. Pray for the person (if you know them or just the random encounter) that you will be sharing with and that they will be receptive to the message you have to share. Trust that the Lord is going with you and before you, to prepare the way.
- Build a relationship: Get to know the person you're sharing with. Take time to get to know them and their interests. Listen to them and show genuine care and concern for their well-being. Building a relationship creates a foundation of trust and respect, making it more likely that the person will be open to hearing your message. Listen to the concerns and beliefs to build a connection before sharing the gospel message. Even if it is a quick encounter, we can still show we care and are interested in them as a person, their experiences, and thoughts. That is still building a relationship and rapport with the person.
- Share your testimony: Tell them how the gospel has changed your life. Sharing your personal story is a powerful way to share the gospel with someone and can be relatable. I love to say, “What Jesus did for me, he can do for you.” Talk about how you became a Christian and the impact your faith has had on your life. Be honest about your struggles and how your faith has helped you through them. Your personal story is unique and authentic and can help the person you’re sharing with understand the power of the gospel.
- Share the good news: Keep it simple, easy to understand, and loving. You could say something like, “Jesus died for our sins and rose from the grave”. Explain that God created us, that we’ve all sinned and fallen short of God’s standard, that Jesus died on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins, and that by trusting in him we can be reconciled to God and have eternal life. Use verses from the Bible to support your message and help the person understand the truth of the gospel. Make sure to always respect others and approach conversations with empathy and understanding, even if someone doesn't share your beliefs.
- Invite them to church or a Christian Event: Inviting someone to your church or a Christian event can help open the door to give them a choice. Inviting them to a place to be surrounded by other believers can show them the beautiful love between believers.
- Offer to pray with them: Offer to pray for any needs or concerns they have and ask God to continue to work in their life. Pray for salvation and for the Lord to set up divine appointments for the person. Ask the Lord to bless them and for them to come to know Jesus and experience the forgiveness and love that he offers.
Additional Tips
- Use social media to share your story.
- Join or start a Bible study or discipleship group.
- Incorporate into daily conversations. Find natural opportunities to talk about your faith in everyday interactions.
- Acts of services to demonstrate Christian love through actions like helping others in need. It can be a great way to open the door to share your faith.
- Be patient: Sharing the gospel may be a process, so don't expect immediate results.
“Come to Jesus moments” happen every day and at all different stages of life and no two are the same. For the Apostle Paul it happened on the road to Damascus, but for you it might have happened in the quiet of your house or in a Sunday School classroom. However, in that moment, no matter where you are, when that choice to follow Jesus is made it’s worth praising the Lord. The Samaritan Woman (John 4:1-42) had had five husbands and was living with a man she wasn’t married to. Her come-to-Jesus moment was at the well, when Jesus himself asked her for a drink of water and then ended up telling her, “I AM the Messiah!” She chose to believe and accept. After her encounter with Jesus at the well, her life changed and she found forgiveness, and I believe in that moment Jesus filled a void that only He could for her. Then, she did something that each of us today can do, she ran back to her town to tell everyone what Jesus had done for her! Today I want to challenge you to share your God story with someone you know this week and allow God to use your story to encourage, inspire, and draw people to Him!
“if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart, one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation.” (Romans 10:9-11 NKJV)
“And He said to them, 'He who has ears to hear, let him hear!'" Mark 4:9 NKJV
