Must Go
In John 4, Jesus must go through Samaria. Must, not just needed but had to go. Many people will tell us that God does not need us and while God doesn't need us in the sense that He is all-powerful, all-knowing, and sovereign, He absolutely wants us. He wants a relationship with us, and He chooses to use us to share the good news of the Gospel with others. He needs us to participate in the fulfillment of the gospel.
The Samaritan woman didn't realize how much she needed Jesus until she encountered Him at the well. When Jesus went through Samaria, it wasn't an accident. He went because He wanted to meet a woman right in the middle of her mess. He knew exactly who she was, what she had been through, and what she needed. In a single encounter, Jesus transformed her mess into a message. She left her water pots behind, ran back to town, and told everyone, "Come see a man who told me everything I ever did. Could this be the Messiah?" Jesus went because she needed Him, and after meeting Him, she couldn't help but tell others. She had that sense of “I must go”.
The truth is, we need Jesus every moment of every day, and He will go to great lengths to reveal Himself to us. When we experience His love, grace, and truth, we become witnesses of what He has done in our lives so others can discover their need for Him as well.
Now it's our turn to go.
"Go" may look like walking through a difficult season, stepping into a transition, standing on the truth of the Gospel when it's uncomfortable, serving in your church, sharing your faith, becoming a missionary, changing careers, feeding people, ministering or serving in your community, school, job, local jail or recovery center. Whatever your "go" looks like, when Jesus calls, we must go.
I remember clearly when I heard the Lord say, "Go." After a season of being equipped and growing in my relationship with Him, I knew it was time. I didn't feel completely prepared, but I felt His peace and His strength. I trusted that He knew what He was doing, and I knew I must go.
Jesus is intentional in everything He does. He set the example when He went through Samaria to meet one woman at the well whose life would forever be changed. That one encounter impacted an entire community and in return she went and told everybody about a man who told her all the things she ever did he must be the Christ.
If we don't go, there are people who may never realize how much they need Jesus or how willing He is to meet them right where they are.
It's time to go. You must go.
- What "mess" in my life has God transformed into a message for His glory?
- Like the Samaritan woman, am I willing to share my testimony with others?
- Is there someone God may be calling me to reach with the Gospel?
- What does my current "go" look like? Is God calling me into a new season, ministry, or opportunity?
- Am I allowing fear, discomfort, or feelings of inadequacy to keep me from going where God is leading me?
- When God says "go," do I respond with obedience or hesitation?
Lord, thank You for pursuing me and meeting me right where I am. Help me recognize my deep need for You every day. Give me courage to share my testimony, trust Your leading, and obey when You call me to go. Use my life to point others to You, just as the Samaritan woman did.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
