The Warning of the Hired Hand

DEVOTIONAL 3

Scripture: John 10:11-13

"I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep." - John 10:11

The thief attacks the sheep. The wolf devours the sheep. However, the hired hand abandons the sheep. This is the warning Jesus gives in John 10. The hired hand is not always evil.In fact, the hired hand may appear faithful on the surface and can be a believer. Someone you see every Sunday. 

The difference is revealed when pressure comes.

• A shepherd stays. A hired hand runs.

• A shepherd protects. A hired hand preserves himself.

• A shepherd loves the sheep. A hired hand sees the sheep as a responsibility rather than a relationship.

This warning is not just for pastors and church leaders. It applies to all of us. As parents shepherd children. Mentors shepherd those they invest in. Ministry leaders shepherd volunteers. Mature believers shepherd younger believers. God has entrusted every one of us with people to influence, encourage, and care for. The question is not whether we are shepherding someone, but how we are shepherding them.

When conflict arises, do we withdraw? When difficult conversations are needed, do we avoid them? When someone is struggling spiritually, do we step toward them or away from them?

• A shepherd heart reflects Christ. A shepherd speaks truth in love.

• A shepherd remains present when things become messy. A shepherd understands that people are not possessions. They belong to God, and we are simply stewards of what He has entrusted to us.

The beautiful truth is this:

Jesus never asks us to shepherd others without first shepherding us. Jesus remains the Good Shepherd. He guides us, corrects us, protects us, strengthens us, and teaches us how to love others the way He loves us. As we close out this 3-week devotional series, I want to remind you of this. The thief takes. The hired hand runs. The wolf devours. But the Good Shepherd stays. And because He stays with us, we can stay faithful to the people. He has been placed in our care.

• Do you tend to move toward people or away from them when things get difficult?
• Are there areas where the Lord is calling you to grow in courage, compassion, or stewardship?

Lord Jesus,

Thank You for being the Good Shepherd. Help me faithfully steward the people and responsibilities. You have entrusted to me. Guard my heart from becoming self-focused or fearful. Teach me to love deeply, serve humbly, and remain faithful when challenges come. May my life reflect Your shepherd's heart.
