The Power of Your Words
Have you ever noticed how quickly words can travel and how deeply they can impact someone's heart?
Scripture reminds us: "Death and life are in the power of the tongue." Proverbs 18:21 Our words are not small things. They have the ability to encourage or discourage, heal or wound, unite or divide.
One of the greatest dangers the Bible warns us about is gossip. While gossip is often disguised as harmless conversation, it can quietly damage relationships, betray trust, and create division among God's people. Proverbs 11:13 says: "A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret."
When someone trusts us with personal information, we have an opportunity to reflect Christ through our integrity. Every conversation presents a choice: Will we speak words that build up or words that tear down? Paul gives believers this instruction: "Let no unwholesome word proceed out of your mouth, but only that which is good for building up, that it may give grace to the listeners." Ephesians 4:29
Before sharing information about another person, consider these questions:
- Is it true?
- Is it necessary?
- Is it kind?
- Does it honor God?
- Would I say it if that person were standing here?
If the answer is no, it may be better left unsaid. As followers of Christ, we are called to be people who speak life. Instead of gossiping, we can pray. Instead of criticizing, we can encourage. Instead of repeating someone's struggles, we can become known as people who protect confidence and extend grace. Our speech reveals what is taking place within our hearts. When Christ is transforming our hearts, our words begin to reflect His love, mercy, and truth. Today, ask the Lord to make you a person whose words are trustworthy, encouraging, and life-giving.
What is one conversation today where you can intentionally choose encouragement over criticism?
This Week's Challenge: Look for one person who needs encouragement and speak life into them.
Father,
Place a guard over my mouth and a watch over my words. Help me to speak in ways that honor You and encourage others. Forgive me for times when I have participated in conversations that were not pleasing to You. Let my words bring healing, hope, and grace to those around me.
In Jesus' name, Amen.
