Somerset, Kentucky (SPA)—When Phyllis Lawson considers her roots in Pulaski County, one word comes to mind above all others: community. Raised in a family that taught her the values of hard work and civic responsibility early on, Lawson has spent her life giving back to the region she calls home. Now, she is bringing that lifelong dedication to public service directly to the local government level as a candidate for Somerset City Council in Ward 6.
A Proven Track Record of Civic Engagement
For Lawson, community involvement is not a campaign promise—it is a continuous way of life. Over the years, her deep-seated passion for helping others has connected her to numerous non-profit agencies, civic organizations, and local boards.
Her extensive history of hands-on community service includes support and involvement with:
-
Family & Youth Development: Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, Early Childhood Council, and local Habitat for Humanity initiatives.
-
Education & Scholarships: Partnering in funding higher education opportunities through scholarships at Somerset Community College (SCC).
-
Conservation & Animal Welfare: Longtime support for the Humane Society, The Nature Conservancy, and local public libraries.
-
Regional Development: Active participation on boards within the Lake Cumberland Area Development District.
Currently serving as president of Lifeline Foundation Inc.—a nonprofit organization focused on assisting counties across the Lake Cumberland district—Lawson works daily to tackle real-world issues facing local families. Encouraged by business owners and civic leaders who recognized her practical experience, she took the step to offer her leadership on the Somerset City Council.
Key Issues & Policy Vision
Through years of attending council meetings, reviewing upcoming infrastructure projects, and analyzing municipal workshops, Lawson has built a clear, grounded perspective on local policy.
-
Protecting Vital Resources & Long-Term Planning
Lawson believes that long-term community health and safety must never be compromised for short-term financial gains. A key moment that solidified her campaign was observing regional debates over hauling municipal water supply—an issue in which she strongly advocated protecting vital community resources over monetary shortcuts. Her approach ensures that utility infrastructure and public health remain top priorities.
-
Fiscal Responsibility & Open Government
With local government managing multi-million-dollar budgets, Lawson advocates for rigorous oversight and clear rationale behind every dollar spent.
-
Responsible Spending: Ensures thorough reviews of competitive bids, detailed project justifications, and accountability before voting to approve major capital outlays.
-
Ethics First: Supports strict guidelines on municipal gifts and expenditures to maintain public trust.
-
Citizen Engagement: Rejects "rubber-stamp" decision-making, promising to actively listen to constituents in Ward 6 before casting votes on major ordinances.
-
Affordable Housing & Economic Opportunity
As Somerset grows, Lawson recognizes that housing accessibility is critical for working families, senior citizens, and young professionals alike. She advocates for leveraging federal and state grants, building public-private partnerships, and implementing smart zoning policies to expand safe, affordable housing options while protecting property values.
A Leadership Style Built on Listening
Lawson’s approach to governance is rooted in collaboration and open communication. Drawing from her training through municipal leadership programs, including the Kentucky League of Cities (KLC), she approaches council decisions with an emphasis on research, fairness, and mutual respect.
