As Kevin notes on his page:
“Major weather event coverage/updates; this NEVER replaces official NWS coverage! TRR Operations”
We especially appreciate his efforts to promote weather readiness and community education, including public severe weather preparedness events and safety awareness outreach.
Local awareness and preparedness matter — and people who dedicate their time to helping others stay informed deserve recognition.
Be sure to give WxKevin a follow for local weather insights and preparedness information. And as always, continue to monitor the National Weather Service during severe weather events.
Stay aware. Stay prepared. Stay safe.
"I am a certified SKYWarn Storm Spotter for the NWS in Jackson, KY. I am NOT a meteorologist. I have great friends that work for NWS Jackson KY and the Storm Prediction Center and I will never disrespect those who worked their butts off to learn the nuances of our atmosphere.
A little about me: I’ve always loved weather, and can’t count how many times I’ve watched Twister. When I was a kid, on days when the weather was forecasted to be bad I was scared. My dad reassured me through it all, and I remember one night even staying up with me watching The Weather Channel for weather alerts.
I had always held an interest in weather, and even took a meteorology course in college. I followed weather events here and there and would post updates on my personal Facebook page.
Then December 10th 2021 came. I watched in horror (on radar and through Ryan Hall Y’all) as a monster tornado decimated Mayfield, KY. I watched later as another dangerous storm was heading for Bowling Green, and felt powerless. Two tornadoes wreaked absolute havoc in downtown Bowling Green, and that was the night I knew I had to do something.
In March of 2022, I attended a storm spotter class and became a certified SKYWarn Storm Spotter. I still regularly attend classes. I have watched countless hours of weather videos, live streams and case studies. I am a founding member of Storm Chaser Coaching and learn from the greats like Trey Greenwood, Cameron Nixon, Ethan Moriarty just to name a few.
In December 2023, I launched the WxKevin page. Of course the Wx is shorthand for weather. No flashy title, just a place where people knew where to go when they needed weather info.
We have covered some big events on my page. The catastrophic flooding in February 2024, tornado outbreaks of April 2nd, 2024, May 26th, 2024, Hurricane Helene, April 2-3, 2025. Then May 16th would roll around. This was a gut check and confirmation that I had learned weather, because all the boxes were being checked for a significant weather event. I had people afterwards telling me that MY warning was what made them take it seriously. I also made a meteorological breakdown video of May 16th on YouTube, I’d love for you to check it out.
My goal is to educate as many people as possible about severe weather. Because May 16th taught us nothing is impossible. Texas-sized storms can and do strike our area. I sure hope they don’t… but nature’s going to do what she’s going to do.
Severe weather has also impacted my family. In January I lost my niece Jordyn Daws during the winter storm we had. I dedicate my efforts to her.
Weather affects so many aspects of our lives. And for those days the weather turns severe… I want to let you know about it. So thank you for highlighting my efforts and letting me talk about the weather."
