Editorial—(SPA)—Adversity can be absolutely brutal.
Depending on what it is, it can knock you to your knees. It exposes whether your faith is authentic—or just another performance in a church play.
Yet Scripture says:
“My brethren, count it all joy when ye fall into divers temptations (trials, adversity or anything that will get your focus off God); Knowing this, that the trying (testing) of your faith works (produces) patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire (complete), wanting nothing (tempered, content, Kingdom Focused, not worldly).” — James 1:2–4 KJV
To count it all joy… That is a level of spiritual maturity most people never reach.
Why would James say this?
Because adversity does something comfort never can.
Pain purges. Pressure reveals. Affliction exposes what truly matters.
The things that once consumed your attention suddenly feel trivial. What once inspired you may begin to look like vanity. The applause, the trophies, the awards, the titles, and the approval of men lose their grip when life hits hard enough.
Suffering has a way of rearranging priorities and changing perspectives. Instead of climbing a ladder leaning against the wrong wall, you begin to walk with God into uncharted territory—the Word becomes a lamp unto your feet and a light unto your path.
Adversity creates clarity.
It produces purpose. It teaches gratitude. It deepens dependence on God and refines our faith.
Comfort may entertain you… But adversity transforms you. Comfort is what’s popular—it’s where the crowd hangs out. There may be lots of laughter, but it is coming from a place of emptiness, complacency, and apathy.
Some of the deepest faith, strongest character, and clearest vision are forged in seasons you never would have chosen. In the midst of the fire, it doesn’t make sense. You just want it gone. When you step out transformed…your understanding becomes clearer. You may not have all the answers, but you are equipped and purified in Christ.
